10,000 school children have now taken part in educational programmes run by conservation charity the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust (HWDT). The Trust has been inspiring children to cherish their marine environment for over 15 years, with over 200 schools having taken part in the charity’s educational programme since 2005.
HWDT are delighted to receive a cheque for over £300 from pupils at Struan Ocean School based on the Isle of Skye, after they made and sold Ocean School sea salt and seaweed products.
Connecting young people with their marine environment inspires future stewardship. During British Science Week, we engaged with over 350 pupils all across Scotland, sharing knowledge of the whales and dolphins seen off our coasts and championing pathways for working in conservation.

In August 2021, James Armour will attempt to be the first person ever to swim and run the entire length of the Outer Isles, with a target of £10,000 to raise for the Trust. Learn more about his mega challenge

Tomorrow, HWDT’s research vessel Silurian will set course for Dunstaffnage Marina, in preparation for a busy education week on board the floating classroom, working with primary schools from in and around Oban. For those of you who are curious, the Trust are inviting people to come on board for a guided tour, which will run informally between 5pm and 7pm on Thursday 2nd May.
A trip to Tobermory is not complete without a visit to our Discovery Centre, now open for the season. Located on the iconic Main Street, there’s every reason to stop in and find out more about Hebridean whales, dolphins, porpoises and other local wildlife.
