ONLINE TALK: Celebrating 20 years of Silurian with Jenny Hampson

Join our science manager, Jenny, as she sails us down memory lane and celebrates what has been achieved on board over the past 20 years!

Join our Fieldwork Research Manager, Jenny, to hear about some of the highlights of 20 years of Silurian’s Marine Mammal Monitoring Programme!

Did you know that the number of kilometres Silurian has travelled is the equivalent of sailing around the world 5 times? Every single data point has been collected by over 1,000 citizen scientists, sailing over 200,000km of Hebridean Seas. Learn about what we have found in 20 years of data collection, how it has been used to designate Marine Protected Areas on the west coast of Scotland, and exciting projects for the future!

HWDT's research vessel, Silurian, was built in 1979 and has had an adventurous history, including previously being used in filming The Blue Planet. Since 2001, HWDT have been the proud owner of Silurian, more so now than ever as she completes her 20th year of research in the Hebrides. There has been a staggering 250 continuous days of underwater recordings collected, that's the equivalent of streaming music continuously for an entire year! This acoustic data allows us to assess the changing soundscape of the West Coast marine environment. We are hoping that new acoustic upgrade to Silurian may now be able to detect and record minke whale calls which can increase our understanding of the ways these animals use the area, and aid their conservation.

We want our talks to be accessible for everyone so optional subtitles will be generated during the webinar and we are asking you to pay what you can. Your donation will support marine conservation in Scotland. Thank you.
