Ann an co-chomhairleachadh air a stiùireadh le Intearnach Leasachadh Gàidhlig ùr an Urrais, Coinneach MacFhraing, chaidh iarraidh air taghadh de luchd-labhairt na Gàidhlig cuideachadh a thoirt seachad le geàrr-liosta de dh’ainmean a chruinneachadh. ’S e an t-ainm a chleachdas sinn ‘Urras Mhuc-mara nan Eilean’. Bha e follaiseach gum b’ e seo an roghainn a b’ fheàrr le daoine.

’S e miann an Urrais gum bi a’ Ghàidhlig, cànan tùsanach nan Eilean, an lùib ar n-obair aig gach ìre, agus ’s e ceum deimhinne a tha seo a dh’ionnsaigh a’ chinn-uidhe sin.
— Coinneach MacFhraing

’S e prìomh amas an inntearnas leasachadh Gàidhlig, a th’ air a mhaoineachadh tron sgeama Taic Freumhan Coimhearsnachd aig Bord na Gàidhlig, seiseanan sgoile an Urrais a lìbhrigeadh tro mheadhan na Gàidhlig airson a’ chiad uair. Thòisich iad sin an t-seachdain seo fhèin air bòrd Silurian, soitheach-rannsachaidh an Urrais, agus e an-dràsta aig a’ mharina ann an Steòrnabhagh.

In a consultation led by recently-appointed Gaelic Development Intern Kenny Rankin, a wide range of Gaelic speakers, many with previous links to the Trust, were asked to help shortlist potential Gaelic names for the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust. The official Gaelic name to be adopted is ‘Urras Mhuc-mara nan Eilean’, which was the most popular choice by a clear margin.

Translating literally to English as ‘Whales Trust of the Isles’, this name represents an exciting step for HWDT, as we seek to more fully incorporate Gaelic, the native language of the Hebrides, into our work at every level.

One of the main aims of the Gaelic Development Internship, funded by Bòrd na Gàidhlig’s Taic Freumhan Coimhearsnachd scheme, is the delivery of the Trust’s schools programme through the medium of Gaelic for the first time. This week the school sessions are well underway onboard Silurian, the Trust’s research yacht, which is tied up alongside the pontoon in Stornoway Marina.
