This September, HWDT’s education team are setting sail on our research vessel and floating classroom, Silurian, to five coastal schools, never before visited, between Shieldaig and Gairloch.
HWDT’s floating classroom provides first-hand, practical experiences of life onboard a Scottish whale research yacht. Pupils will take part in inspirational outdoor experiences designed to spark an interest in the marine environment and inspire the decision makers of the future. Activities will include; exploring the yacht, meeting the crew, hoisting the sail, spotting with binoculars, shouting "sighting” and listening beneath the waves.
The crew are inviting local communities to join in the exploration, by taking part in our free drop in ‘Open Boat’ event at Gairloch Pontoons, on Tuesday 19 September, 4-5pm and Wednesday 20 September 5-6pm.
Jump aboard for your chance to explore Silurian, check out the equipment, learn about the work of the Trust and the research that’s been undertaken for over 20 years, and have a general nosy around.
This is a great opportunity for local communities to find out how they can get involved by reporting their sightings through our community sightings network, Whale Track, or by taking part in a research exhibition onboard Silurian.
No booking required. Free entry, donations welcome.
