Join Principal Curator of Mammals Richard Sabin to discover the history whales and dolphins at the NHM and the current research carried out.
Walking into the grand entrance of the Natural History Museum of London (NHM) you are greeted by the breath-taking skeleton of an enormous blue whale, known as Hope. In this talk Richard will discuss the incredible collection of whales and dolphins at the museum, including Hope, and share some of the exciting new research they are undertaking.
Richard Sabin is the Principal Curator of Mammals at the museum, and is NHM specialist advisor to the UK Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme. Richard has a particular passion for whales and dolphins, and has even sailed on Silurian, HWDT's research vessel. Richard develops the NHM's National Collection of Cetacea through fieldwork, collections-based research, taxonomic revision and collaborative studies. Richard was the science lead on the redisplay of 'Hope' the blue whale in the NHM's Hintze Hall, as well as the special exhibition 'Whales: Beneath the Surface'. Richard is currently using the NHM collections to carry out exciting new research, including investigating the genetic diversity of large whales.
This promises to be a fascinating talk, and we are delighted to have such a insightful and engaging speaker. Richard will look at the history of the NHM's whale and dolphin collection, and examine the importance of such collections to current research. Richard's talk will be followed by a Q&A. You are invited to join us to find out more about this interesting topic, explore behind the scenes of the museum and ask Richard your questions.
We want our talks to be accessible for everyone so optional subtitles will be generated during the webinar and we are asking you to pay what you can. Your donation will support marine conservation in Scotland. Thank you.
