This unique survey will monitor the behaviour of our resident populations of porpoise and bottlenose dolphin, alongside seasonal visitors, which coincides with the NATO military exercise Joint Warrior.
Joint Warrior is a twice-yearly, at-sea NATO military operation, carried out over two weeks in the Spring and Autumn off the west coast of Scotland. Each year, Silurian surveys are scheduled to coincide with these exercises, where volunteers gain a broad range of training opportunities.
It is incredibly important to monitor cetacean presence and behaviour during the Joint Warrior exercises. The use of military sonar is of particular concern given the reliance cetaceans have on sound to feed, communicate and navigate the seas. Unusual behaviour has been documented by HWDT historically during Joint Warrior. Through our surveys we aim to identify the disturbance impacts, if any, the exercise will have on cetaceans and other marine animals in the area.
